Who does it devastate the most?

Saturday night we were able to donate our time to help out a wonderful foundation… The Giving Gown.  As I mentioned in a previous post, the Giving Gown Foundation collects donations of new and “like-new” formal gowns and accessories and provide them FREE of charge to high school girls who would otherwise be unable to attend their Prom.

They had they annual Prom Preview Fashion Show and Designer Jewelry Fundraiser.  At this event they showed off some of the lovely dresses that will be up for grabs this year on Boutique Day (the day the girls get to select a dress of their very own). They gifted some beautiful Stella & Dot jewelry (donated by Stella & Dot) in exchange for a donation to the foundation.

I had a conversation with someone at the show and the question was asked, “Who does not being able to afford a prom dress devastate more…the girl or the mother?”  I have to admit that even though I am not a mother myself, tears welled up in my eyes at the thought of a mother’s heartbreak over not being able to provide a dress. You want the world for your child but sometimes money is tight and essentials are more important that extravagances like a prom dress.

JoAnn Trchalek (along with cofounder Adina Walker) started the foundation 4 years ago. The first year the group clothed around 90 girls for prom. Last year, they put over 500 girls into prom dresses.  Just like their tagline says, “Making dreams come true…one dress at a time.”  So, bravo to JoAnn, Adina and their hardworking team of volunteers for pulling together something so special!!
